So this can apply for any coffeeshop to go – but teens mostly like Starbucks and it’s more trendy. If you go into a Starbucks any school day around 3-4 o’clock, it will be mobbed with teenagers!
So, the trash problem. When Googling “how much trash does Starbucks make” first thing that pops up is “For now, we know that in their last annual reporting period, Starbucks likely used between 2.916 and 2.946 billion cups at their stores, or an average of 8,070,428 per day. Interestingly, Starbucks’ own website states that they “account for approximately 4 billion cups globally each year“. (From this website)
My mom used to think that the coffee paper cups were not that big of a deal, since they are paper. But turns out they are lined with plastic!
Of course, Starbucks is open to people bringing in their own cups – because they always have some that you can buy in the store. But not enough people are using them. Then there is the fact that some employees are not that open. I have seen them measure out a drink in a disposable cup, then pour it in mine! Also, one guy was totally weird once and didn’t understand why we were handing him our reusable cups. Just to be clear, we had Starbucks reusable cups with Starbucks logo on them! Also, we use the Starbucks reusable cups, just to be clear on size. (A lot of the reusable cups have measurements right on them)
But yes, they are plastic. I admit, we are not plastic free. But at least these are reusable! Some people go to Starbucks every day, think how many disposable cups that’s saving!
Oh and no, it is not a hassle having a reusable cup with you. But yes, it’s not always with me, but I try to have it as much as possible.
